Title

Puffy Sparkle Cozy Dome (WIP)

Description

This will be a small geodesic dome (painted pvc pipe) about 8″ in diameter. Each of the triangles in the dome will be filled with puffy sparkle-vinyl pillows (he fabric they make booths out of in classic 50’s style diners, it is sold by the yard in a rainbow of colors). Each pillow will be in the shape of the triangle around it, and it will attach via hooks to each of the three hub connectors that surrounds it so it will sort of be “stretched” in each open triangle. There will be some space between the pillow and the 3 struts around it to let in air and light. At night, there will be lights inside – either fairy lights or soft LED strips, so the sparkle vinyl will shimmer and sparkle against the lights at night. Some of the “puffy triangles” could also be translucent sparkle vinyl, inside of which I could put colored fairy lights and bubble wrap to puff it up. Basically it’ll be a soft, cozy, sparkly chill space. Color scheme TBD.

Optional but encouraged: detailed drawings, CAD files/SketchUp documents, sketches, or other graphic illustrations of your creative concept.

Will it need power?

Yes

If it will need power, what is your power plan?

I can plug into a camp genny if we place it near my camp (probably in the badlands), we really just need to run the lights at night. Technically I could run it on batteries, but they’d need to be replaced every morning.

Does the piece incorporate flame effects, moveable pieces, and/or is it climbable?

No

Have you completed any other large scale art projects? (In this media? Where and when? How did the project go? Do you have pictures or recordings?)

No, other than working sporadically on DAFT.

You may upload photos/recording of past projects here

What is your timeline detailing the planning, creation, installment, and removal of your project?

The dome is easy, as I’ve already looked up plans online and priced out all the parts and calculated the measurements. I’ve worked with glitter vinyl fabric in the past on upholstery projects. The good news is that all the parts and the fabric are waterproof. I’ll build it at home and then break it down like any PVC dome. I can transport it myself, however it would be great if there were any space on the load-in trucks that go in the week before for the effigy build. I can pick up all the parts from the effigy field when I arrive later in the week.

How much money do you need? (Up to $575) We are looking for a thorough itemized budget and the amount of grant money you are requesting. Please include a reasonably researched estimate of the cost of the materials you expect to need.

I will need all $575 as the project will cost more than that. The hub connectors will cost me around $200 and the PVC struts will cost me around $175 for an 8 foot diameter dome. That’s about a 100 sq ft surface area and glitter vinyl comes in 54″ wide bolts – by my calculations I need about 15 yards of vinyl fabric to make the pillows, and vinyl fabric can be anywhere from $16 to $26/yd depending on the color. Using a conservative estimate at $16/yd, that’s $240 worth of fabric. So $200 + $175 + $240 = $615 and I haven’t even purchased the lights yet.

Assuming a covid safe way: in 2022-2023 We would like the artists to give community workshops outside of Flipside. Do you think you have a workshop idea that could be provided to the community? If so, please tell us what it is.

Sure – sewing and working with difficult fabrics for outdoor applications is something I can present workshops on.

Assuming a covid safe way: We will be having the 2022 Ignition Philter fundraiser in Austin after the fall town hall (usually held in late September/ early October.) Would you be willing/able to bring the piece back for that event?

Yes
